Adobe Certifications (IRCs)

Karen Quist from Certiport will be here to answer all your questions about getting your students certified in Adobe software. The Adobe certification is the only recognized IRC at the moment for graphic design programs. Karen will not be doing a sales pitch, but will be on-hand answering all our questions and getting to meet us in person to put a face with a name, since she replaced Art Maxwell a year ago.

Designing a Board Game Project

Dorothy Loges will show us a project-based learning lesson she teaches in her classroom where a team of students have to design, develop and create a physical board game using equipment in the program, which sometimes includes 3D printers for game pieces. The game has to go through rigorous testing which includes, but not limited to different students playing the game and discovering mistakes or missing components, prior to final submission.

Here is the link to Dorothy’s Powerpoint presentation.

Work Based Learning via a Student Enterprise (Design Shop)

Student Enterprise / Design Shop (work based learning opportunity): Angi Yowell will present how to take your passions and strengths and turn them into work based learning opportunities via a student enterprise. Learn how the design shop in her Design Academy has developed over the years into a full force (open-to-the-public) business all the while keeping up with curriculum lessons, SkillsUSA and everything else that comes with teaching a graphic arts program. The shop offers design and printing services of flyers, posters and brochures; screen printing (lots of it!); sublimation of garments and promotional materials; wide format printing; and vinyl cutting. Angi will show you how she manages her shop on a daily basis, providing insight on the pros/cons and barriers to watch out for when operating a student enterprise; how to start an enterprise in your program; and how to grow your enterprise but yet keep it manageable. Take away ideas on how you can start simple and offer this learning opportunity in your program (not to mention grow your activity account)!

Here’s THE PRESENTATION LINK to Angi’s Google slides. The first slide in this presentation contains the links to the forms shown during the presentation. They include the shop order forms (.ai files), the Absent sheets, I’m Outta Here sheets, and the I Was a Slacker sheets.
